I am a lifelong resident of San Jose, and I will not sit still when someone who promotes murder and violence comes here to spread his gospel. His lyrics talk about shooting gay men in the head and burning them with acid. I am a musician too -- what if I decided to go on tour with songs that glorify murdering Jamaicans? This will not happen in my hometown. I have written to Matt Crudo, the general manager for the Voodoo Lounge, who states that Voodoo only provides a venue -- they are "presenting" the artist; rather, Mr. Crudo says, it's being presented by "Audioareobiks [sic] / Inefable [sic] Ent." But Voodoo is all too happy to make money off this kind of hatemongering.
I urge anyone who cares about our local community to speak up and protest. Write to the papers, protest in person, spread the word, whatever needs to be done. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom to incite violence or murder. People must be held accountable for their actions and their words. |
