Norfolk gay rights group GLBTLive is planning a protest before Friday night's Buju Banton's concert at The Norva in Norfolk.

Activists call Reggae musician homophobic

NORFOLK – Detractors call his music violent and homophobic; fans say he often preaches against violence and wins Grammys.

While venues across the country have cancelled Buju Banton’s Reggae concert in recent weeks, his Friday concert at The Norva in downtown Norfolk is still on.

Norfolk gay rights group GLBTLive is planning a protest outside the venue just before the concert.

Norva owner Bill Reid cancelled Banton's Saturday performance at another venue he owns -- The National in Richmond -- after pressure from gay rights groups.

Recently, Reid cancelled a Jell-o wrestling match at The Norva after City Council raised concerns.

City attorney Bernard Pishko says the city is getting requests to block Friday's concert. But this time, the city will not step in, Pishko stated.
